Beauty Campaign: Gena Lisa

Gena Lisa is a lingerie shop in downtown Nyack specializing in fitting women. Ownger Gena Lisanto says, "I invest a lot of time choosing pieces that make up the collection-- focusing not just on the look, but fit and price too". Her commitment to making women feel comfortable and look their best was evident as soon as we stepped into the shop. In the luxurious, cozy shop, beautiful music was playing softly and Gena's smile welcomed us in.

When we told her about our Beauty Campaign, she felt illequipped to be an authority on beauty, but as we began to talk, we realized she was just the opposite.

Q: How would you define beauty?

A: Joy of life!

Q: Have you always had this definition?

A: Absolutely.

Q: Was there an even or person in your past that you think contributes to how you choose to define beauty?

A: My paret. My parents always expressed joy and the importance of finding joy.

Q: How does your definition of beauty impact your everyday life?

A: It helps me get through the day. You always have to remember that everything is going to be okay. Even if there happens to be a difficult challenge, the reward is always better. If there's a difficulty stressing you out, just know that in a week, a month, or a year, you'll wake up with an incredible blessing that you woudn't have had if not for the struggle. It's a beautiful pattern the way struggle and reward follow eachother around. Even when things are really bad, just remember you're winning the lottery at that point because you're destined for something so great; that's the yin and yang.

Q: What advice would you give a woman struggling to practically define beauty for herself?

A: I tell women this all the time-- we all have something that's attractive and magical to someone else. I always see women who struggle withtheir body image and I try to tell them to hug that part of thir body and give love to that part of their body that they struggle to see as beautiful. Remember, it's your life. The parts you may not like are still a part of who you are and they got you to this point in your life. If you went back and looked at your life as a movie and saw the woman who struggled, you would want to love, hug, cherish her, and be compassionate toward her. Love yourself like that and don't wonder why.

Q: Who is your beauty icon?

A: All the women who came before me. I think of my mother, my aunt, my grandmother who came before me. But that goes for everyone. Every woman who stands before me-- I look at her and find something to love.
